THIS WEEK

I’m excited to show a large collection of new work and to meet in person with you. I’m still obsessing over the possibilities of bone and ebony, large-bellied pieces and some joyous new greens and orange colored stones.

While we’re here, let me share a zesty posting  that I stumbled on a few days ago on the wonderful Museum of Alternative Jewellery Facebook page that talked about my piece the “hoary heart” brooch.

“What is this?” “How on EARTH did you do it?”
As an art jeweller, if your work manages to inspire one or both of the above questions, then congratulations- you’ve SMASHED it!
Should you be lucky enough to receive them, you can be confident that your creation either-
a.) Utilises an unexpected or non-traditional material (e.g silicone putty) in such a fresh or unique way (processing through a potato ricer) that it no longer resembles ANYTHING that we have seen before, or
b.) Utilises a traditional material (e.g gold) to produce an effect so intricate or unusual that it demonstrates a high level of skill or inventiveness on the part of the artist (granulation, reticulation or gold ‘knitting’.)
I think it’s fair to say that Susan Chin’s ‘Hoary Heart’ brooch inspires BOTH of these questions- and HOW!
The body of this strange, spiky beauty?
A carved piece of Gabon ebony; matte in appearance, almost to the point that it resembles coal, velvet or fur.
Those wiry hair-like protrusions that cover the heart’s surface?
Fine filaments of buttery high-carat gold; inserted into precisely drilled holes and kept in place via tension setting (‘flaring’ the end of each wire to create tiny internal rivets that lock each filament into place.)
Given the combustible nature of wood, Chin resorted to cold connections when attaching the heart to the brooch frame; an abstract cage-like construction in gold and patinated silver sporting visible rivet-heads, a punky stud, an errant tentacle and a glittering sunstone cabochon.
ANY mashing up of ‘primitive’ and ‘noble’ materials is an instant winner for me; and Susan’s blackened, brutalist heart has well and TRULY got mine! 🖤😍🖤
The way this artist melds materials simply HAS to be seen to be believed.

Bio

My path as a jeweler began with a handed down box of tools and a class at the “Y” in Philadelphia. The inheritance of tools included some bits of ebony and bone; materials that continue to compel me decades later.

Other materials I use are sterling and fine silver, yellow golds, shakudo (a copper and gold alloy), mokume gane, pearls, stones precious and not, mirrors, glass and other unobtainium.  I use natural conflict free diamonds and also will use lab grown diamonds on request.  My pieces are made with  Harmony  Metals products-which are 100% recycled. 

I spent several years learning metalsmithing at Penland School in the hills of North Carolina. I now live in northern California where my wooden bench with its tools, the metals, bone, and culture of art are the primary instructors and collaborators.

My ideas  derive from the collective experiences of my waking and imaginative life; such things as the forms of the natural world . . . the clever seed pods, the designs of the human body, floppy microorganisms. A brooch or a ring emerges from my stash of materials and is coaxed and teased until it is a thing which can be cherished. In many cases the process of working itself is the catalyst for a new idea . . . works in progress that have more grit than the polished idea that I thought I was aiming for and one thing leading to another.

I see most of my works as installments in an ongoing conversation that began many pieces and many years ago.


Penland School of Crafts is world-renowned for total-immersion, hands-on workshops that have provided dynamic, often life-changing, educational experiences to thousands of people. Less well known, perhaps, are Penland’s multiyear artist residencies. This beautiful volume now tells the story of the school’s extraordinary Resident Artist and Core Fellowship programs, which have for decades launched and nurtured scores of brilliant artistic careers.
